The Dead Sea, also called the Salt Sea in the Bible, is the lowest point on Earth. Its extremely high salt content makes it impossible for most life to exist. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were located near its southern end before God destroyed them. Lot's wife famously became a pillar of salt when she looked back during their escape.
