Persia
Persia (modern Iran) was a major empire that conquered Babylon and allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem. King Cyrus issued the decree permitting the temple's reconstruction. The books of Esther and Daniel are set partly in the Persian court. Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes before returning to rebuild Jerusalem's walls.

Biblical Significance
God's Sovereignty Over Nations
The Persian Empire demonstrates God's control over world powers. Isaiah prophesied about Cyrus by name 150 years before his birth, calling him God's 'anointed' (messiah) and 'shepherd' who would accomplish God's purposes for Israel.
Fulfillment of Prophecy
The Persian conquest of Babylon and the subsequent release of the Jews fulfilled Jeremiah's prophecy of 70 years of exile. The rebuilding of the temple fulfilled prophecies from Haggai and Zechariah.
Preservation of God's People
Through Esther and Mordecai, God preserved the Jewish people from annihilation under the Persian Empire. The feast of Purim commemorates this deliverance to this day.
Restoration and Renewal
The Persian period marked a time of spiritual renewal for Israel. Ezra restored the reading and teaching of the Torah, while Nehemiah rebuilt the walls and reorganized Jerusalem's community.
