Peniel

Jacob wrestled with a mysterious figure described as 'a man' but who was clearly divine—Jacob named the place 'face of God' and said he had seen God face to face. The prophet Hosea calls him 'the angel.' Most understand this as a theophany—a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ. The wrestling represented Jacob's lifelong struggle to receive blessing through his own efforts, culminating in surrender to God.
